“When I see photographs or documentary films dating from
the war I feel as if I were its child, so to speak, as if those horrors
I did not experience cast a shadow
over me, and one from which I shall never entirely emerge.”
W.G. Sebald - On the Natural History of Destruction
READER ADVISORY for the following excerpts from my novel-in-process,
S E V E N T E E N, is a work of experimental fiction which uses poetry methods of precision and inference in a prose genre. The technique of free indirect speech is used as a narrative style or "unreliable third person." As such, S E V E N T E E N is not a readily accessible work to many readers. In places it is raw and unrelenting in it’s focus, a book not meant for children.
Based on historical facts S E V E N T E E N is researched from numerous scholarly and first hand narrative books about WWI I both from Holocaust archives,as well as from my personal interviews of WWII survivors and authorities on the subject of those times. The Montana scenes are from geological source materials and inspired from my work with children which spans almost 30 years.
The voices and events depicted in S E V E N T E E N are not positive. Neither are they negative, affording voice to truth denied is life affirming in the way that Goya’s folio DISASTERS OF WAR inspires peace. In respect for the difficulties endured especially by residents of Poland the Baltics, and Finland 1933 through 1955, much of the content depicts the dark yet personal of historical reality. Historically based fabrication, such as the "Tunnelman" sections, follows suit as DARK GENRE fiction.
S E V E N T E E E N has strong parodic elements. In this milieu, you'll find irony humor as did the people who lived these experiences.
Another obstacle to expectations of easy read literature, is the writing style of SEVENTEEN. Told in vernacular, by the characters themselves - It is sentence by sentence thick with researched facts and often non-sequeter meaning, as the characters rush to tell their stories to a disbelieving audience. In other words, the style is concise and therefore not as easily assimilated as the commercial or main stream fiction, albeit much main stream literature is beautifully written
For further categorization of S E V E N T E E N' S style, read about Meta-Fiction as a sub-genre or literary style, Wikipedia has an excellent article explaining META-FICTION and related HYSTERICAL FICTION.
Uh, by the way, the excerpts may be in a different sequence when the book is finalized. There are many more segments to go, many completed and some yet to be written.
Thank you for reading some of my work in progress. I hope you are in some way enlightened, inspired or informed!
