So what’s it about? Your book?
You’d think this is an easy question to answer. After all I’m writing the book. I chose to write the book. It’s my baby. Baby is the answer. My book is a baby with its own mind and pace of development. It’s developing and innocent, and keeps me up all night.
Why did I have this baby? As personal fulfillment, a means to reach beyond myself to something of wordily significance. Something that gives more than it gets. An answer to a universal need.
My generation is dying out. There are fewer and fewer of us to tell the cautionary tales, relate the record of the 20th century, enrich the substance of the past for generations coming up, so they can know each life has meaning beyond itself. That no one is alone in life lived no matter how long but a continuum of all life. For this, there must be traces, artifacts, records. One does not simply live and disappear.
What is the biggest story of the 20th century? The most deserving of archive?
